Trump dials India’s PM Modi, thanks him for support in Ukraine war

US President Donald Trump dialed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a distinctly personal chat that blended birthday wishes with high-stakes global diplomacy.

The call marked their first direct conversation in months and came at a pivotal moment: Washington’s push to resolve the Ukraine war and a fresh thaw in US–India relations after weeks of tough trade rhetoric.

Trump, who described the exchange as “wonderful,” publicly thanked Modi for his support in seeking a peaceful solution to the bloody Russia–Ukraine conflict.

The Prime Minister responded with a gracious message on X, expressing both friendship and a commitment to lift the US–India partnership to “new heights” while backing Trump’s efforts on Ukraine.

US-India reset: Friendship, trade, and Ukraine peace efforts

The context surrounding Trump’s call was as important as the conversation itself.

In August, relations between the White House and New Delhi had hit a rocky patch: Washington imposed steep tariffs on Indian goods and harshly criticized India’s continued purchases of Russian oil, suggesting India was “indirectly financing” the Kremlin’s war machine.

Yet, Trump’s birthday outreach and Modi’s warm response have signaled a reopening of diplomatic pathways.

Trade negotiators from both nations spent nearly seven hours in marathon meetings in New Delhi on the same day as the leaders’ phone call, seeking ways to resolve tariffs and unlock the next phase of a “mutually beneficial” trade agreement.

Trump called India a “very special partner,” voicing confidence in ongoing trade talks and the potential for a brighter economic future.

Modi, consistently advocating an early peace in Ukraine, also told Russian President Vladimir Putin in past months that “peace efforts do not succeed in the midst of bombs and bullets”.

India’s role as a diplomatic bridge has grown more prominent.

The country has hosted meetings with Ukrainian and Russian foreign ministers, offered direct mediation, and voiced public support for ending the conflict through “dialogue and diplomacy,” affirming its place as one of the few global actors trusted by both sides to mediate.

According to officials, New Delhi remains ready to support “all constructive efforts” for an enduring peace and continues to emphasize that solutions must be found around the negotiating table.

A new chapter?

The dynamics of the Trump–Modi exchange reflect a broader recalibration of strategy for both nations.

With the war in Ukraine dragging on and the world’s attention increasingly focused on the humanitarian and economic fallout, Washington is keen to encourage greater Indian involvement, not only in peace negotiations but also as a stabilizing force in the Indo-Pacific region.

Trump’s decision to make Modi’s birthday an occasion for gratitude and renewed partnership is being read as a sign of ambitions that reach beyond mere symbolism.

Indian diplomats insist that any durable peace will require a broad international consensus, and the latest dialogue between Modi and Trump sets the stage for deeper collaboration, perhaps even joint initiatives to pressure Moscow and Kyiv towards the negotiating table.

The warmth of the recent call demonstrates a willingness to move past economic quarrels and unite on a shared vision for conflict resolution.

In an era shadowed by war and competition, the world’s two largest democracies appear to be rediscovering the power of “close friends and natural partners”.

With eyes now on both capitals, the prospect of an Indian-brokered peace in Ukraine and a more harmonious US–India relationship, looks less distant than ever.
