China’s Xi warns on Taiwan while highlighting Trump trade progress

Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Thursday that China’s doors would only open wider to American businesses, while also warning that mishandling the Taiwan issue could push China-US relations into a highly perilous situation, according to Chinese state media reports.

Xi made the remarks during a meeting with a delegation of US business leaders accompanying US President Donald Trump on a visit to Beijing during early European trading hours.

The delegation included senior executives such as Elon Musk of Tesla, Jensen Huang of NVIDIA, and Tim Cook of Apple at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

According to China’s state-run Xinhua news agency, Xi told the delegation that he believed US companies would find broader prospects in China as the country continued opening its economy.

Xi also said China and the United States should “build constructive strategic stable relations as a new positioning of bilateral ties.”

Xi reiterates concerns over Taiwan

Ahead of the anticipated Trump-Xi meeting, Trump said he would urge Beijing to open itself further to Western countries.

During Thursday’s remarks, Xi also addressed the issue of Taiwan, which remains a key point of tension between Washington and Beijing.

Taiwan is democratically governed, claimed by China, and supported militarily by the United States.

According to Chinese state broadcaster CCTV, Xi described Taiwan as the “most important issue in China-US relations.”

“The Taiwan question is the most important issue in China-US relations,” Xi said.

He further warned that the future stability of bilateral ties would depend on how the issue is managed.

“If it is handled well, bilateral relations can remain generally stable. If mishandled, the two nations could collide or even come into conflict, pushing the entire China-US relationship into a highly perilous situation,” Xi added.

The remarks came as Taiwan stated that the United States had “reaffirmed its clear and firm support” for the island, according to NDTV World.

Business leaders attend Beijing meeting

The presence of top US technology and business executives highlighted ongoing commercial engagement between the world’s two largest economies despite persistent geopolitical tensions.

The meeting brought together some of the most influential American corporate leaders with Chinese officials at a time when trade relations, technology restrictions, and Taiwan continue to shape bilateral discussions.

Xi’s comments suggesting wider market access appeared aimed at reassuring foreign businesses operating in China amid concerns over slowing economic growth and geopolitical uncertainty.

At the same time, his remarks on Taiwan underscored Beijing’s continued sensitivity over the issue and its significance in broader US-China relations.

Markets remain steady after remarks

Financial markets showed little immediate reaction following Xi’s comments.

The US Dollar Index (DXY) remained largely unchanged and was trading near 98.50 at the time of writing.

S&P 500 futures also showed no significant movement after the statements from the Chinese leader.
