Sushila Karki set to become Nepal’s interim PM amid political turmoil

In a historic move that has caught the eye of political watchers across South Asia, Nepal is all set to appoint its first woman Chief Justice, Sushila Karki, as the interim Prime Minister.

This appointment comes at a critical time, as the country grapples with widespread protests and political unrest that have shaken the foundations of its government.

This development represents not merely a change in leadership but a fundamental shift toward addressing the systemic issues that have plagued Nepalese governance for years.

Sushila Karki: A trusted face to calm the storm

The turmoil began when mass protests erupted over allegations of corruption and heavy-handed government measures, sparking clashes that left dozens dead and hundreds injured.

The resignation of former Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli left a power vacuum, demanding an impartial figure capable of navigating this crisis.

Enter Sushila Karki, 73, a career jurist known for her stringent stance against corruption and her reputation for fairness and integrity.

Karki’s unique background as Nepal’s first female Chief Justice makes her a rare figure of trust in a country tired of partisan politics and political infighting.

According to sources close to the political process, Karki’s interim appointment was agreed upon after consultations between the President and key military and political leaders who sought a caretaker government to steer the country through to the next elections without tilting the playing field.

Reactions and what lies ahead

The streets of Kathmandu, where protesters led mainly by young activists have demanded change for months, showed signs of cautious optimism following the announcement.

Many see Karki as a refreshing departure from traditional party politics. “She has a reputation for integrity and independence, which is exactly what Nepal needs right now,” said one protest organizer.

Still, not everyone is convinced it will be a smooth transition.

Legal experts note that since Karki is not a sitting member of parliament, her appointment as Prime Minister might face constitutional challenges or calls for swift electoral reforms to clarify her mandate.

Politically, her tenure will likely be short but crucial. The interim government is expected to stabilise the political climate, hold fresh elections, and initiate steps against corruption and misgovernance that have fueled public frustration.

With Nepal caught between the economic and geopolitical pressures of neighboring giants India and China, Karki’s leadership could mark a turning point for the nation’s democracy and its future direction.

As Nepal looks ahead, all eyes will remain on how Sushila Karki’s stewardship unfolds, whether this trailblazing jurist can indeed steer Nepal toward calmer political waters and renewed public trust.
